I am very grateful for all of the advice I received after my mention of choosing a Viking stove . Silly me I assumed it was a good solid brand , now actually and personally I don't know , but from what I hear I am choosing not choose. We were also thinking of this model , the GE monogram dual fuel , its got a lot of great features and has a great warranty. No appliance is perfect , right?
The other stoves we are still considering are the Kitchen aid commercial style gas and Jenn Air. We don't want to settle for something ho hum...good looks and function is not too much to ask.
I would love more thoughts , anyone want to chime in on their PERSONAL experience with the stoves I have mentioned ???
Some exciting news , I received a Delta faucet for my new kitchen , I will show you a little later, and sounds like they are ordering our railings as well the kitchen should be in on the 10th of December so I hear. You will see me with my nose up against the windows peering in .....such an exciting time.

I hope I wasn't out of bounds with my comment on the GE Cafe knobs catching fire? Our previous gas stove (now in stove heaven) was a GE Profile, the highest model (from 2004) and it was fabulous.
We really liked gas. However, with a slide-in, please consider getting the counters cut properly. We didn't do this when we built our house, and I accidentally knocked a cookie sheet behind the slide in (despite having the gap-filler from the manufacturer). The cookie sheet hit the electric plug, it arced and a fire started behind the gas stove, while it was ON. Dammit. I never got to eat the scones I was baking and I am still without a stove.
We are definitely going for gas again. Nobody can talk us out of it. Plus, I think in Canada, it is a more economical option than electric top.
I woke up specifically to write to you about stoves, I'm so excited.
My husband and I would do a 36" or larger in a HEARTBEAT. He's from the UK and they just don't do 30" four-burners in most kitchens there. In Canada, it is so rare to come across anything bigger than a 30" that it really takes my breath away to see it. It's true, it would take longer to heat up and perhaps I don't personally need a bigger stove, but they are beautiful. Something about the proportions.
IKEA does a GORGEOUS professional looking gas range. Would you consider that? I would!!!!!
Also, Costco Canada does a Blue Star professional range (30") that people have crossed the border to come get.
I wish you luck and happy shopping. Just my two cents on gas stoves!

I apologize for the third comment in a row. It's just that we are in stove obsessive mode right now.
Would you consider a gas cooktop and a built in convection wall oven? Nice, custom look and doesn't have to be more expensive than a gas range.
That is my last post, I promise!
Wood countertops are becoming popular again in modern kitchens. We now know that wooden countertops, when properly cared for, are both long lasting and sanitary.
We just had a new wall oven installed and I was talking to the installer and he said that life a today's new appliances is somewhere between 5-10 years -- it doesn't matter how much or how little they cost. My mom purchased new appliances this past summer and her intaller said pretty much the same thing.
I now have to replace the rest of my appliances, but I have re-adjusted my plans so that I am purchasing the most attractive appliances I can with features that I will actually need and use instead of buying appliances with all of the bells and whistles that are much more expensive. I am also making sure that they get good reviews as far as performance and quality are concerned.

I got a Viking stove two years ago, it was a nightmare, when it was installed it burned out so i had a brand new 6 burner stove that looked amazing but didn't work. We had to have it repaired, and within a year the motherboard burned out because it wasn't properly repaired, now it doesn't heat up or the temp goes down. i had to buy a temperature gauge to make sure it was at the proper temp. I need to have it repaired, really frustrating, my old stove never broke down in 10 years.
Hope this is helpful. At least you have some time to do more research.
Lilibet , your info was helpful , but the GE monogram is not the GE cafe , I do want to hear good and bad .
I will be having custom counters installed after we get our appliances so everything should fit perfectly .
Still doing my research for now
Oh, i thought you mentioned GE Cafe in last post.
Eep! Monogram ROCKS. Saw it in person today. SWEET! Too rich for my blood -- we are in a 5 year max. house.
Good luck! Oh -- Sears & Corbeil will match any price for 60 days after your purchase and pay you the difference if you find your stove cheaper somewhere else.
We put in a Jenn Air at the last house - it was very commercial looking . Gas & super attractive. Cheaper than some of the others but it had that substantial look. I liked it a lot - never had a problem with it. I even got compliments on it.
My former husband and I bought a Kitchenaid dual fuel range when we remodeled the kitchen. That stove is the one thing I miss the most about not living in that house any longer. It was stylish, of course, but its efficiency was what hooked me. The oven is especially wonderful for roasting poultry and baking cakes. I loved doing cut up roasted potatoes in that oven. They came out perfectly crispy on the outside but soft inside. The gas cooktop was great for cooking on high to medium. The 4 burner model, the one we had, only has one size burner. It is super powerful but really has too much gas for slow simmering. I used to turn the burner off and on so as not to burn things. The simmer plate that comes with the range is helpful for holding in the heat when you shut the burner off for a short period of time. Given the chance to purchase that range again, I would without hesitation. Good luck!

We are knee deep in dual fuel options and have just made our decision. Bosch Integra dual fuel (also considered the Evolution but design and space dictated)
Chris,
Our horror story was with the Jenn-Air gas stove! And not that it was just a lemmon, because the second one had the same problem.

GE is being sold, we have had three of their stoves and not happy with any of them- even the profile series.
We are looking to replace ours with a kitchenaid very industrial looking one : o )
I have the KitchenAid KDSS907SSS - Dual Fuel Range, Architect Series II and couldn't be happier with it. I love the electric stove for baking things nice and evenly and the convection oven feature. Come to think of it, I have never had anything come out of the stove less than perfect come out of that stove. The gas range is great although you can't really cook at low temperatures. The only problem we've had is once when the starter wouldn't work. Other that, I'd highly recommend KitchenAid (all our appliances except for our Panasonic Inverter Microwave are KitchenAid).
Please don't waste your money on Kitchen-Aid, they should have stuck to just making mixers! We purchased a new home 9 years ago with Kitchen-Aid Architect series appliances and they have had nothing but problems or just simply stopped working after only a couple of years.
Do your homework and read reviews. Kitchen-aid products reliablity rating is very low.
Your better off with Jennair of GE!
Maybe this link will help...

We had the Jenn Air dual fuel in our last house and it is the only thing I miss from there. We have a super big commercial range in this house and I hate it and can't wait to sell it and "down grade" to something like the Jenn Air again. Also we looked at a Bosch stove and that company has a really good reputation and the style was almost identical to the Jenn Air. We had a kitchen aid dishwasher in our last house and it was a nightmare. Good luck! I know how stressful these decisions can be.
We are living in our 9th house and finally have electic wall ovens and a gas cooktop. I wouldn't want anything else. If this is your forever home, I would consider doing this. Getting older and lifting a turkey or heavy pan out a stand alone oven can be really difficult.
As for brands, I don't think there are any standouts. We have a GE Profile gas cooktop for 4 years and only problem is the labels rubbed off from microfiber towel. No biggie. Our Electrolux ovens are good. Baking is a little uneven, convection is even more uneven, but otherwise great ovens. One electronic panel went out within 6 months, but easily replaced under warranty.
We currently have the smooth top Kitchen Aid architect series range and it is great we love it's functions and easy cleaning . Just hard to try something new like gas , I guess it's a gamble .
BlueStar all the way! Costco.ca, cheaper if you pick up at the store.
